About Me

Here I am, the man behind the curtain. I'm at Horseshoe Curve in July of 2010.

I'm Alex Gillam; I grew up on Long Island, New York but I live in Spartanburg, South Carolina with my wife, son and daughter. I have a BA in Journalism from SUNY New Paltz and a AAS in Computer Technology with Networking Electives from Spartanburg Community College. I'm a Cisco Certified Networking Associate and hold a CompTIA A+ certification as well. I work as a network analyst for a major ISP.

I've been fascinated by trains since I was a young child and have been an active model railroader since my dad bought me my first HO set in 1991. Since then I've built numerous layouts in various scales. You can read about them on the "Previous Layouts" page.

In addition to model railroading,  also enjoy railfanning, hiking, camping, canoeing & kayaking, photography, cooking and brewing beer.

  1. Hi, Alex. Do you have a schematic for your Altoona layout?

  2. Hi! Yes, you'll find the track plan for the layout on the Background page. It doesn't show the Altoona shop but it does show must of the other track.

  4. Dear Alex--I've got a modelling problem and I hope you wouldn't mind sharing some experience. After what seems like a hundred years, I've gotten around to the GHQ PRR pewter conversion for the Kato 2-8-2. I'm baffled at how to install the cab sides so that they appear to be a square fit--they're not a square fit at the bottoms of the cab sides. I saw your model here and was hoping you might share any tips you might have used while constructing your own. It will be greatly appreciated.

My e-mail is robym12825@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.

  5. Hi,
What type of weather wash do you use for your buildings? They seem to have a few different products. Thanks!
